Der als Wilhelm Dieterle und ab ca. 1930 anglisierte William Dieterle (geboren am 15. Juli 1893 in Ludwigshafen; gestorben am 8. Dezember 1972 in Ottobrunn) arbeitete seit 1930 als Regisseur in Hollywood. Sein Film aus dem Jahre 1937 schildert Leben und Wirken Émile Zolas. Der jüdische Hauptmann Alfred Dreyfus wird wegen angeblicher verräterischer Aktivitäten verurteilt. Der französische Schriftsteller Émile Zola ist jedoch von seiner Unschuld überzeugt. Er vermutet ein Komplott der antisemitisch eingestellten Armeeführung und riskiert seine Karriere, um Dreyfus zu helfen.
