José Ferrer verkörpert den unschuldig verurteilten Hauptmann Alfred Dreyfus, der erst durch das Engagement von Émile Zola Freiheit und Ehre zurückgewinnen kann. Am 13. Januar 1898 erscheint J‘accuse/Ich klage an, ein offener Brief an den Staatspräsidenten, in dem sich Zola für Dreyfus einsetzt. Damit entfacht er einen ungeahnten innenpolitischen Sturm. Zola selbst wird noch 1898 vom Kriegsminister sowie von einigen Privatpersonen verklagt. In diversen Prozessen wird er wegen Diffamierung zu einer Geld- und Gefängnisstrafe verurteilt, der er sich jedoch durch Flucht nach London entziehen kann.

José Ferrer, who also directed the film, stars as French Army captain Alfred Dreyfus, who is chosen as the scapegoat for a major military scandal for no other reason than his Jewishness. Wrongly accused of treason, Dreyfus is stripped of his rank and shipped off to Devil‘s Island. The screenplay for I Accuse was adapted from the Nicholas Haasz‘ book by Gore Vidal, who strongly critized America‘s McCarthy-era „witch hunts“.
