In seinem Film schildert der französische Historiker und Schriftsteller Patrick Rotman die Zeit vom Frühjahr 1944 bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs – allen voran die furchtbaren Geschehnisse im Konzentrationslager Auschwitz-Birkenau und die Schicksale der Überlebenden. “Wer nicht in Auschwitz war, kommt nie hinein. Wer dort war, kommt nie heraus.“ (Primo Levi).

In his film French historian and author Patrick Rotman focuses on the last years of Second World War, especially on the concentration-camp Auschwitz-Birkenau and the fate of survivors. And how can one continue to live? The documentary is based on Patrick Rotman’s book Les survivants (Paris 2005) which contains accounts of a dozen Nazi concentration camp survivors.
