Im besetzten Frankreich von 1942 schlägt der gut aussehende und gerissene Pariser Antiquitätenhändler Robert Klein skrupellos Profit aus der Notlage der jüdischen Bevölkerung. Als er von einem jüdischen Namensvetter erfährt, macht er sich aus Angst vor Verwechslung auf die Suche nach dem Doppelgänger. Regisseur Joseph Losey drehte mit Monsieur Klein eine kafkaesk anmutende Parabel über Identitätsverlust und Mitläufertum. Das mit drei Césars preisgekrönte Werk wurde nach seiner Premiere sehr kontrovers diskutiert, so beschimpften konservative Kreise Hauptdarsteller Alain Delon als Nestbeschmutzer.

Antiques dealer Robert Klein cannot find any fault with the state of affairs in German-occupied France. He has a well-furnished flat, a mistress, and business is booming. Jews facing discrimination because of laws edicted by the French government are desperate to sell valuable works of art and it is easy for him to get them at bargain prices. His cosy life is disrupted when he realizes that there is another Robert Klein in Paris – a Jew with a rather mysterious behaviour.
