Ranging from scholars to immigrants, policemen and constructing workers, Porquoi Israel stresses the diversity of Israeli society. Different people tell about their approach, their life and
their aims. The films also examine the situation of Soviet Jews of whom many did not feel welcome in Israel. A young Russian man, standing in front of the Wailing Wall, says: "I haven't been here for 2000 years."
Claude Lanzmann, who had been a member of the French Left, found his views taking him further and further away from his colleagues. "I was fed up. It became impossible to discuss things with them. (...) In
filming the people of Israel on a simple, realistic level – the good with the bad – I have countered many attacks and exploded the myth of Israel being a Sparta of the Middle East, united like a fist against the
struggling Palestinians." (Claude Lanzmann in an interview with Simson Carlebach, The Jerusalem Post Magazine, February 21, 1975)
Director Claude Lanzmann will be present during the screening.
